Shoes have always been necessary for humans, from their first use as simple foot protection to the massive fashion business that produces them now. It is unclear when shoes were initially worn, as it is with any invention from antiquity, and archaeological evidence has only served to exacerbate the problem. The earliest shoes ever found date to roughly 7000 BCE and were found in America.

The oldest shoes seem to have been made from a variety of materials, including rope, leaves, and animal skins. Archeological examples of shoes dating back to up to 40,000 years ago are rare because they are all made of highly perishable materials, but others contend that there is further proof.Due to the fett being covered, archaeologists studying ancient bones have observed a decrease in the size and strength of toe bones during this time. This assertion is far from being supported, though.

The majority of shoes originally had a protective sole that was fastened to the foot by bands or straps, akin to the modern sandal. Although the necessity of shoes may seem obvious, their creation marked a significant advancement in people's capacity for travel, employment, and resistance to adverse environments.

Many cultures throughout the world have evolved a shoe etiquette. People are expected to take off their shoes while entering a home in most of Asia; Many families throughout North America and Europe now follow this custom. In Asia, hosts frequently supply indoor shoes, but this is less typical elsewhere. Before entering a mosque, Muslims always take their shoes off.
